Townsend Trails Alliance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization developed to promote, maintain, improve and provide stewardship to local trail systems

What do we expect to accomplish

Townsend has incredible natural assets, but we also face some real challenges. Limited infrastructure, fragmented land use, and a lack of connected, well maintained outdoor spaces make it harder for residents and visitors to fully enjoy what we have.

Our vision is to change that. Townsend Trails Alliance exists to thoughtfully connect, improve, and promote our trail systems in a way that respects the town’s character while creating more opportunities for recreation, community engagement, and small scale economic growth. We are not looking to overdevelop. We are looking to unlock what is already here, make it accessible, and build something the community can take pride in.

  • Improve Accessibility

We want to make our trails more accessible to more people. Right now, access can be limited by unclear trailheads, uneven conditions, or a lack of information about where to go and what to expect.

Our goal is to remove those barriers where we can. That means better signage, clearer mapping, safer crossings, and thoughtful improvements that open up portions of the trail network to families, beginners, and those with mobility challenges. Accessibility does not mean changing everything. It means being intentional so more people can experience and enjoy what Townsend already has to offer.

  • Establish Connectivity

Many of our trail areas exist in isolation. Our goal is to begin linking key parcels into a more cohesive network so people can move more easily between them. Even small connections can make a big difference in how usable and valuable these spaces become.
  • Establish Stewardship

Trails do not maintain themselves. We want to take ownership of routine maintenance, basic improvements, and long term care. That includes clearing, marking, and protecting trails so they remain safe, sustainable, and enjoyable for years to come.
  • Community Engagement

This only works if the community is part of it. We plan to host volunteer days, small events, and outreach efforts to get people involved and build awareness. The goal is to create a sense of shared ownership and pride in our trail system.
